  • Power is too important to be left to private business.

  • Market forces have left this country with the prospect of being unable to meet our energy requirements in the next few years.

Our energy system is broken. Instead of delivering warmth to our homes, it delivers huge profits to fossil fuel giants – and families are left in the cold. We need a serious plan to fix the energy m...

don't hold your breath mike.

When is it going to be widely known that our energy bills are three times higher than the average in Europe. And when will indifferent Tories admit it.

Do not depend on Labour to achieve this. Keir Starmer is actually a Conservative.

A publicly owned energy generation company is the way forward.

I've said it before. You don't need to compensate Nationalisation, if you create a company to compete with them. Just as the Labour Party should have done when it bailed out the banks. They could have turned them into State Banks, and undercut the others.

Localise energy you also localise power

Are the New Tesla Towers Up and Running yet ?

This appears a vastly over optimistic piece without knowing more details. Starmer claimed it would be a publicly owned company, but just creating a company means very little. We need to know how investment there will be in this company, or more to the point, how much energy it's planned to generate. Starmer being Starmer means he'll say _anything_ to get elected. It's not beyond him to create the company, but then not fund it, so it's not producing enough energy to actually make a difference. What's more, if it's "publicly owned" but paid for by PFI, or private borrowing, it still leaves the company beholden to the private sector. We need to know how it's going to be funded, how much money it will have, and what the plans are for how much energy it's going to produce... ... otherwise it could all be hot air. And Starmer is no stranger to that. And without wanting to pass the buck, because We Own It already do so much, it's down to people like yourselves to be asking these questions, because The Labour Party won't answer me if I ask.

Except that they haven't actually done it, [not being in power], but only "pledged" to do so !! And we all know from two and a half years' sad experience, [and the Starmenfuhrer's own mouth], what the lying toe-rag's pledges are worth !!!!

It's a scam.

Our #EnergyBills will be double what we paid last winter. And Liz Truss just picked our pockets to boost energy companies profits by another £130 billion.

We pay the price for their profits. We say #DontPay - pledge to strike now 👉 dontpay.uk

    • We all need to reduce our energy consumption, and there will never be a true incentive for this to happen as long as big business is allowed to continue to profit from selling it to us.

      Ellie Harrison, campaign founder
    • Energy supply and environmental issues should not be left in the hands of private for-profit interests.

      Ralf Gauger, anti-nuclear activist
    • There is a clear and compelling relationship between public ownership and the ability of communities to get off dirty energy.

      Naomi Klein, writer
    • 68% of the public want the energy companies to be publicly run. Whether we need local renewable energy or a national drive to reduce fuel poverty, it doesn’t make sense for our future to be dictated by Big Six profits

      Cat Hobbs, We Own It
    • Citizens [must] take back control over electricity generation so that the switch to renewables can be made without delay, while any profits generated go not to shareholders but back into supporting hungry public services.

      Naomi Klein, writer
    • We can’t just fight fires and win incremental gains, we need systemic change. The energy we use, its source, its ownership and its distribution needs to come under democratic control, and it needs to be clean and renewable.

      Ewa Jasiewicz, Reclaim the Power
    • In the screwy logic of Britain’s privatised energy sector, the public assumes the risk while the corporations get to scoop the profits.

      Aditya Chakrabortty, The Guardian
    • Rather than letting us be held to ransom by the Big Six bullies, let’s take energy under the democratic control of the British people and make sure it works for the interests of all of us, not the money-grabbing shareholders.

      Owen Jones, writer
    • Privatisation has delivered… a system in which train operators and energy firms compete not on service – but on how many tariffs they can bamboozle customers with.

      Aditya Chakrabortty, The Guardian
    • A publicly owned energy sector would be far cheaper than the existing privatised regime, because governments can borrow at much lower interest rates. Revenues from energy would then go to the public purse rather than private profit.

Professor Andrew Cumbers, University of Glasgow
    • At its heart privatisation in Britain was never about selling public networks but about selling the rights to tax those who are obliged to use them.

      James Meek, writer
    • For-profit energy doesn’t work: thousands of people die every winter whilst companies make billions. We need affordable, sustainable and public and community owned energy now.

      Clare Welton, Fuel Poverty Action
    • Energy connects us to communities all over the world. We share a common climate, and to safeguard it, we need to re-common what’s ours – water, air, land, food, our time and labour and freedom of movement.

      Ewa Jasiewicz, Reclaim the Power
    • An active role for government and public sector utilities is thus a far more important condition for developing renewable energy than any expensive system of public subsidies for markets or private investors.

Professor David Hall, University of Greenwich
    • For people it’s self-evident that goods on which everybody is dependent should belong to the public.
